Summer Home Maintenance Checklist

Summer is just around the corner. Take advantage of the warm weather and prepare your home for the heat, storms and humidity! Below is a checklist to consider doing for the season. Divvy up the responsibilities or hire a professional while you prepare for your summer vacation.

1. Gutter Cleaning
Gutters and downspouts should be cleaned of leaves and debris. It is important to make sure your gutters and downspouts are working properly because they are your first line of defense against a wet basement or crawl space. Consider upgrading your gutters with gutter covers. With

2. Roof Inspection
You don’t have to climb up a ladder to check your roof. Use binoculars or a camera to look for missing, cracked, curling, or buckling shingles. If you notice anything that needs closer inspection or repair, have a professional come look at it.

3. Exterior Paint and Siding
Wash your siding using an ordinary garden hose and a mild detergent. If using a pressure washer, be careful as it can damage the siding or force water under it, causing mildew. Check vinyl and aluminum siding for cracks or damage. Have chipped siding repaired or replaced before it creates a problem in terms of letting water seep into your home.

4. Windows

5. Air Conditioning
Before the hot weather arrives, be sure to service your air conditioner. Replace your air filter every 1-3 months with a quality filter and trim any shrubs near your unit.

6. Inspect your Attic and Basement
Inspecting your attic, basement and/or crawl space may not be the most favorite part of this checklist, but it is important. You’ll want to check for any indication of pests, insects, mold or mildew, and water leakage. Tip: Turning off the lights will help reveal peeking daylight.
